How many digits do you need?
- 4 digits: 10,000 combinations. Minimum acceptable with lockout after failed attempts.
- 6 digits: 1,000,000 combinations. Recommended for iPhones and bank accounts.
- 8 digits: 100,000,000 combinations. For high security level.
PIN vs. password
PINs are secure on physical devices because the hardware protects them: they lock after several failed attempts. In web applications, a PIN without that lockout is vulnerable to brute-force attacks. For online accounts, a long password with varied characters is always preferable.
