Frequently asked questions

BMI calculator: how to calculate and interpret it

The Body Mass Index (BMI) relates a person's weight and height to classify nutritional status. It is the most widely used indicator by the WHO and public health services worldwide.

BMI formula

BMI = weight (kg) / height² (m). A person of 70 kg and 1.75 m has BMI = 70 / 3.0625 = 22.86. Ranges: underweight (<18.5), normal (18.5–24.9), overweight (25–29.9), obese (≥30).

BMI limitations

  • Does not distinguish between muscle mass and body fat.
  • Athletes may have a high BMI without true obesity.
  • Does not consider fat distribution (abdominal vs. peripheral).
  • Ideal ranges vary by age, sex, and ethnicity.

BMI and cardiovascular risk

A BMI above 25 is associated with higher risk of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Combine it with waist circumference for a more complete assessment and always consult a health professional.
