Medication dose calculator: weight-based guidance
The dose calculator provides guidance on medication amounts based on body weight. It is especially useful for parents with young children, caregivers, and field health workers. Always consult a doctor or pharmacist before administering any medication.
Weight-based dosing (mg/kg)
Many medications, especially in pediatrics, are dosed by body weight in kg. For example, ibuprofen: 5-10 mg/kg every 6-8 hours. For a 20 kg child the dose would be 100-200 mg. The maximum safe dose is equally important to avoid toxicity.
Reference medications
- Paracetamol (acetaminophen): 10-15 mg/kg every 4-6 hours (max 75 mg/kg/day).
- Ibuprofen: 5-10 mg/kg every 6-8 hours (max 40 mg/kg/day).
- Amoxicillin: 25-50 mg/kg/day divided into 3 doses.
Important notice
This calculator is for guidance only. The correct dose depends on the indication, renal and hepatic function, interactions with other medications, and the specific formulation available. Always check the medication leaflet and consult a healthcare professional.
